Monday October 29, 2012, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 515 miles (829 km)
Last night we had dinner at Murchison’s Tavern and enjoyed the fireplace and locals. We had another early start as this was a possible 100 km day if we couldn’t find an accommodation. The day started off like the previous several days with lots of climbing. But the sun was shining bright so we had fun. We have our climbing legs now so we are used to it. But this day was different as the ups and downs never stopped. A few miles out of town we stopped at the longest swing bridge in New Zealand. Since we are tourists we said why not. The usual charge just to walk across is $5 but the guy working there said anyone who bicycles here is free. It was fun but a big unnerving due to the swinging.
About half way to Westport there was a backpacker that didn’t look very inviting so we decided to push on to Westport. The scenery was ever changing and beautiful but as we grew closer the headwinds picked up and with the continued hills we grew tired. After 9 hours and 100 km we finally made it to Westport and stopped at the first motel we saw. After a quick shower and laundry we visited a local tavern for a few pints and pizza. Soon the tavern was taken over by a local rugby team that had just won a championship the day before and was partying. A few of them struck up a conversation with us so after another pint we left for a well deserved rest. Tomorrow we will head the 57 km down the road to Punakaiki and hope to have a rest day there.
