We rode to Mt. Pleasant, SC a bridge ride away from Charleston and spent two nights so that we could tour the area as shown on my last post. We left on a quiet Sunday morning towards Savannah where we will store our bikes with our friend Nicole. Nicole cycled with us from Blaine, WA to Oxnard, CA last June to August while my wife Andee and son Cary drove our truck and set up our camp sites. Nicole now lives in Savannah. Andee and Cary are driving up from Cape Canaveral, FL on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, picking us up then my family will drive to Myrtle Beach, SC for a few days in a resort. We will have an early family reunion before we arrive home in Cape Canaveral on December 3rd.

Our ride to Savannah, GA has turned out longer than expected since we are zig-zagging on smaller country roads rather than 4 lane US 17 which is very busy and mostly no shoulder. These roads are quiet and beautiful and also a challenge for Jocelyn to navigate our way south. Many times these roads have turned to dirt or sand but we find our way. We are also staying in more motels than camping since either our timing is off on arriving near a campground too early or that the campground does not allow tents. I never would have believed that but there are many campgrounds in NC and SC that are for RVs only. In fact, Jocelyn talked on the phone with two campgrounds where we were planning on staying and both said “No tents”. I can’t imagine why. Way up north they do not allow tenting in the winter because water is cut off so one must be self-contained in an RV but the campgrounds around here don’t close. So today we are in another motel in Hardeeville, SC. Fortunately the motels are fairly reasonable at $50. We have paid more for camping.

A few days ago, Jocelyn was bit by a very aggressive dog. We have been chased by hundreds of dogs around the world and fortunately this is only the second dog bite. I was bit in the country of Azerbaijan about a mile from the Iran border. At that time three dogs chased me and one grabbed my leg and wouldn’t let go. I was so worried that Iran would not let me enter so I covered the wound. Fortunately, Jocelyn’s bite was a quick one with few punctures. At this point we both got off our bikes and used them as a defensive shield and threatened to hit the dog. He finally backed off. It was a very scary event and since then we look around more when we hear dogs barking at us. The dog was in front of a trailer but no one responded even with several loud air horn honks.
