Puerto Escondido

Saturday September 26, 2015, 137 miles (220 km) – Total so far: 11,500 miles (18,507 km)

We continued riding and entered our 7th state of Oaxaca. A few days were spent riding through the mountains until we reached the Pacific once again. We found our cheapest hotel yet in Rio Grande. At $12 Jocelyn was busy for a while smashing cockroaches with her sandal but once they were cleared out it was okay. The next day we rode in to the Port and touristy town of Puerto Escondido. We had a nice lunch on the beach then contacted our warmshowers host Jim, an American living in Mexico for the past 8 years. At the restaurant we met a very nice local who took us to his friend’s bike shop. The last two days Jocelyn has had a loose headset that we could not tighten. The proprietor was able to fix this and we soon met Jim on his bike who guided us to his really nice top level apartment overlooking the town. The views and sea breeze are awesome. It’s like living in a tree forest with birds everywhere. Last night we went to one of his favorite fish restaurants. Today we will travel to the beach and rent a surfboard. A fine break day is planned.

Thanks to Eduardo in La Paz for forwarding our package from home to Santiago in Mexico City. Andee sent this to Eduardo and it took over a month since we were there. He quickly forwarded it by DHL and we received it the day before we left for Acapulco. Our hosts in Mexico have been great!

Traffic had been backed up for several hours near the peak. I asked Jocelyn to get closer to this truck. She wisely said no.

The road was blocked on both sides. We were able to cycle around the dump truck. The people are airing their grievances. They close the road to allow a meeting place.
