A few scenes from Lima, Peru March 22, 2016. Our Washington State to Argentina Adventure ., . Our World Tour Adventure ., Perumikey8590 Tuesday March 22, 2016 Jocelyn has been following Antti from Finland for a few years now. We were in Kyrgyzstan at the same time in 2014 but never met. We met him for breakfast yesterday as he left Lima and continued north. http://riversanddeserts.com/en/ The Cathedral of Lima with the archbishops’ home on the left. We toured both. The home is now a three story museum. I wonder why he need such a large house. This used to be the head of the Catholic church in all the Americas. The Cathedral of Lima started in the 1500’s. Above the main entrance. Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Inca Empire. On his expedition he captured and killed the Incan emperor Atahualpa and claimed the fallen empire for the Spanish. He was a cousin of Hernan Cortes who defeated the Aztec Empire in Mexico. The remains of Pizarro are in this box. Such beautiful mosaic artwork. Each square is less than 1 inch. The entire floor, ceiling, and walls are mosaic. The coat of arms for the viceroyalty of Peru. There are many people of viceroyalty buried under the church. This is a mother and child. A side chapel carved in mahogany. The main altar. Lima Cathedral crypts. All the archbishops are buried directly beneath the main altar. A little eerie. A side chapel built by a wealthy family. Very old choral books from the 1500’s. The largest of the books were about 2 feet long. A cool door knocker. Another nearby church. A delicious lunch salad. And another church. We walked to this city pyramid this morning but it was closed. After we saw how heavily it has been restored we were not interested anymore. Unrestored on the left. Restored with mud bricks. Lovers Park near the beach. This reminded us of the California coast. Last night Jocelyn googled for the best wings in Lima. It was close to us so we had a fine lunch at Wingmans. We followed that with a visit to this brewery while contemplating our upcoming 14 day 1,000km ride. We are staying in the Miraflores district of Lima. We cycled in from the north along the coast.
