Saturday September 10, 2011, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 299 miles (481 km)
We slept in until the sun woke us up at 7:30. The lodge is surrounded by trees so not much light comes through. We had a delicious homemade breakfast with everything including the pancakes from scratch. After that Jocelyn wrote in her journal and I hiked around the grounds. We definitely want to come back and spend some time here.
The ride to Perry was uneventful except for a few dogs that couldn’t make it through their fences. There were lots of chicken farms that smelled terrible. These farms are fully enclosed so I guess the chickens never see daylight. We passed through the town of Mayo which has a huge prison. It must be a high security prison because the coiled razor wire covers the entire fence not just the top. We have never seen that before.
A few miles out of Perry we heard a car approaching with the horn going. It was my wife and son greeting us! We pulled over and my son brought us each out an ice cold beer! One of the best I have ever had. One of Jocelyn’s friends came down from FSU to also visit. So we have a few rooms for the night. I took everything off the bikes, unloaded, and took away several pounds of unnecessary stuff. Jocelyn also suggested that I transfer some of the remaining stuff to her to lighten my load. I have been struggling somewhat and a lighter load will certainly help. What more could you ask from a partner and daughter. Thanks Jocelyn!
