Tuesday October 25, 2011, 33 miles (53 km) – Total so far: 1,649 miles (2,653 km)
In the late morning we picked up our bikes with four new Schwalbe tires installed then went back to the Best Western to load up the bikes. Thanks for the knowledgeable and friendly guys from Lakeside Sports for their service. We then had lunch and finally rolled out of town after 1:30 with our first tailwind in Texas! It was a beautiful climbing ride through cut rock, cactus and purple flowers. We rode alongside Lake Amistad, a National Park and climbed to an easy 1600 feet. We were both amazed at the beauty and quiet. Several times we hit 28 mph going down the grades. Super fun! One time we went through a pass and watched as a train passed by many miles away. I thought I was in the old west! We pulled in to Comstock, Texas after 33 miles and looked at our options. There is one motel in town (of course the Comstock Motel), one Café that opens at 6, and one food mart that closes at 7. There is a campground about 10 miles out but no food there. We thought about going there to camp but a lazy end of the day here sounded too good to pass up. We checked in and went across the street for some beer and breakfast food. This is a small but very nice motel. They do get a lot of bicycle traffic here. Jocelyn is lying out by the front door as the sun is going down. What a restful place as we wait for the café to open. I think the entire town is waiting. Tomorrow we have our day planned to ride into Sanderson at 82 miles away. It sits about 3000 feet. We are up for the challenge.
If there is anybody from my old work reading this I would love to hear from you. Just click on the guestbook and say Hi! Thanks.
