Wednesday April 2, 2014, 107 miles (172 km) – Total so far: 1,388 miles (2,234 km)
April 1, 2014 67 miles We had a great visit with Brian and his family. He and two friends cycled the world. One of his partners, Morgan, also came over and we talked at length about their new book and upcoming movie (www.solidreams.net). His parents cooked a delicious meal and we enjoyed food, wine, and conversation late into the night. It is hosts like this that make this trip special. We have been very fortunate to have been hosted four times with great people. After a filling breakfast we were off once again on an overcast windy day. The miles came easy as we cycled inland through mostly flat wine country. We made excellent time and cycled until dark then pulled over in a wooded area and set up camp. We were excited about this as it was our first stealth camping experience. Jocelyn has done this many times on her previous tours without me. We were awakened very late with a car pulling up nearby and three people getting out and arguing very loudly. Fortunately Jocelyn positioned our camp away from any car areas. They finally left but I was thinking that if one of the guys had shot another (they were that angry sounding) and we were camping nearby what a mess it would have been. The rest of the night only the local coyotes kept us up. I’m just glad they didn’t come to investigate us. Laying in a tent and thinking about wild animals kind of keeps me up.
April 2, 2014 We were up early on a very windy day and took to the mountains. After breakfast from a market in a small town we were off to battle the many hills and very strong headwind. It seemed like we crawled all day and ended up in the town of St Maximin after only 40 miles.
