Wednesday October 19, 2011, 72 miles (116 km) – Total so far: 1,416 miles (2,279 km)
We were greeted early by Monument Hill outside of La Grange. At 520 feet it was our largest yet. While Jocelyn pretty much flew by me I have to admit I had to walk the last portion. But that’s okay with me. We continued through the beautiful countryside ringing my bike bell at all the cows. Of all the ranch animals cows always lift their heads and look. I wonder what they are thinking. I am reminded of the old ‘Far Side’ cartoon that shows cows standing on their hind legs and chatting. When a car is approaching one cow yells ‘car’ and they all get down on 4 legs and stare. Most horses seem scared and run away. We don’t know the difference between all the different types of cattle but there certainly are lots of them.
We stopped for lunch at Brenda’s Place in Flatonia. It is a bar and grill that serves an excellent grilled cheese sandwich and of course ice cold Lone Star beer. We met ‘Mr. Brenda’ who told us some history of the place and gave us some good information about riding through west Texas. Since the next accommodations were 40 miles away at Luling we got on the road. Every mile was tough but we made it to town after 6 with a solid 72 miles. There were no restaurants or taxi service so the motel manager gave us a ride to town for dinner. We called him when we were finished and he picked us up. What great service! It just amazes me how some people are so nice to travelers such as us. Our goal for tomorrow is San Antonio.
