Happy Thanksgiving from Granada, Nicaragua

Thursday November 26, 2015

November 25, 2015 We completed our one week Spanish class and are thirsty for more. It is surprising how many people come here for weeks at a time on their vacations to study Spanish. Some have been coming here for years and say that this is the best way to learn. We believe that because when class is over you have ample opportunity to practice what you just learned on the street and in the marketplace. Most locals we encounter are very friendly and willing to help us learn. We converse with our homestay family and can really tell the difference already. It is fast paced and difficult but the one-on-one teacher ratio really helped me at my pace. At first I had though Jocelyn and I could have the same teacher but was quickly discouraged to do that. It really worked out well. In class we met a Canadian couple that is enrolled for a month then will live and volunteer in Nicaragua for a year! What an adventure for Chris and Kendra. In between classes we have been exploring Granada. It is a very low key but popular tourist destination and well suited for our type of adventure. Our homestay has provided excellent meals three times a day. We decided to stay on one more day for Thanksgiving and look for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

November 26, 2015 We found a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal at Margarita’s Restaurant in downtown Granada. We enjoyed the meal while watching American football in English at this American owned restaurant. We have also enjoyed Reilly’s Irish Tavern in Granada as they have some of the best chicken wings we have ever eaten and we have eaten wings around the world. Tomorrow we will cycle to Ometepe Island, Nicaragua.

On Sunday mornings a band and firecracker guy (see large tube to right) give a Catholic blessing to homes for a fee of about $.30. It starts at dawn and goes on all day. In other words there are firecrackers blasting away all day.

There has been a dengue outbreak here so fumigators go house to house blowing in a mosquito spray. It's awful. Notice all the haze coming out of the house on the left.
