We spent an extra day in Portland, Maine to walk around the waterfront and old downtown areas. The next morning, we continued south along another rail trail before riding on the coast then back to the rail trail and U.S. 1. We had a very enjoyable ride then settled on a motel near the very historic town, Kennebunkport, Maine (established 1833) as the rain was coming again and the campgrounds we looked at were closed for the season.
The next day we rode into New Hampshire and found an open campground near Hampton, N.H. New Hampshire was a quick ride as we found ourselves entering Massachusetts on the beachside during a bright sunny day.
To our complete surprise we crossed the Merrimack River on U.S. 1 into the town of Newburyport and there was my wife, Andee, and her friend, our next host, Margaret! The circumstances and timing of us meeting them like this were incredible as we had decided to have lunch in Newburyport after seeing a nice portside restaurant. They had seen us riding over the bridge. We all enjoyed a really nice reunion and lunch together then Margaret and Andee took off in the car to see the sights while Jocelyn and I rode through several more very historic towns before arriving in Magnolia Village just south of Gloucester. Margaret has lived in this cool little beach town for many years. All of these town were established during the early 1600’s.
I will fly to Denver for a business trip tomorrow while Jocelyn and her mom explore this area together. We will be back on our bikes next week.
