Day 21: Back on the ACA map and another oasis appears.

Friday October 14, 2011, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 1,140 miles (1,834 km)

>We got an early start today as we had some backtracking to do. There was a lot of construction nearby so we negotiated with trucks and closed lanes. We finally found ourselves on Hwy 62 which would lead us to the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) route. It was about 20 miles north of us. We had a mid-morning treat of a sweet roll and chocolate milk from a market in the middle of nowhere. Jocelyn found a new friend, a very cute beagle puppy. We were worried that the dog would follow us back onto the road so asked a guy to hold onto the dog while we peddled away. We encountered many dog chasings with one trying to bite my forward pannier. I rang my bell and it quickly backed off.

We continued to climb north and had lunch in Silsbee. At around 3 we were passing through the town of Kountze when a really nice motel appeared. We were both suffering from saddle sores. I looked at Jocelyn and she gave me the ‘let’s stop’ look. I didn’t need any more convincing so we pulled in and got one of the two remaining rooms left. A lot of city people come here for the weekend and it is Friday. This Motel 8 is a large suite where the bikes are actually lost in the room! And the price was $55! Sold! The only place around was a food mart so we bought some microwave stuff and of course a few beers. We are settled in nicely with all the laundry done and hanging around. Jocelyn laid out by the pool and I did a little wading. It is 6 now and what to do rest after a short 50 miles. It is time to study the maps to see where we go next.
