Monterey then south to San Luis Obispo

Tuesday July 14, 2015, 160 miles (257 km) – Total so far: 9,352 miles (15,051 km)

Three days 160 miles We left Aptos and headed towards Monterey. When we reached Salinas we stopped at Bobcat Bicycles as I could hear loose spokes on my rear wheel. Sebastian tensioned and trued the wheel then worked on Jocelyn’s brakes. At this point it was mid-Saturday afternoon and since we wanted to spend Sunday at the world famous Monterey Aquarium we loaded the bikes onto the truck and drove there to save time. It was the weekend so the campgrounds were full as were many of the motels. We found a large decent room then spent the evening walking around Cannery Row.

On Sunday we were at the Monterey Aquarium when it opened and spent the day. What a fascinating and well done aquarium! We decided not to drive the very narrow Highway 1 down the coast because of the busy summer vehicle traffic and instead opted on the interior valley drive to San Luis Obispo. My niece Makani works in San Louis Obispo and we will visit the area for two nights. Once again we looked for a campground but they were either full or just very expensive dirt to pitch a tent on so we will motel it for the next two nights. One more ride remains for all of us, Morro Bay to Santa Maria. There we will visit Andee’s cousin Pam. The following day Andee, Cary, and Nicole will head east to Florida and Jocelyn and I will do what we do best and bicycle south on our own.

  1. It’s hard to believe that all of that happened within a week or less! Jimmy and the aquarium are just a few reasons for returning to California and spending more time. Mom and I are already missing the fast pace of traveling with ya’ll.
